Park Bowlers – The annual meeting of Kings Heath Park Bowling Club, was held on Friday last at the Parish Hall, Mr. J. Harvey presiding.
The report of the season was of a very satisfactory character, and there was a balance in hand of several pounds.
The following officers were elected: President, Mr. J. Cox; vice-presidents, Mr. P.J. Hannon, M.P., Councillor H.E. Goodby, J.P., Messrs. E. Sharp, P. Urwin, Lloyd and Britton; chairman, Mr. J. Harvey; hon. secretary, Mr. E.A. Bagott; assistant hon. secretary, Mr. W.T. Marshall; hon. treasurer, Mr. A. Amphlett; captain Parks League team, Mr. F. Hancox; captain Warwickshire and Worcestershire Bowling Association team, Mr. W. Bennett; delegates to the Parks League Association, Messrs. Bagott and W.T. Marshall; delegates to the Warwickshire and Worcestershire Bowling Association, Messrs. Bagott and W. Bennett; hon. auditors, Messrs. O. Cranston and W.T. Marshall.
Regret was expressed at the resignation of Mr. J.G. Underwood[1], from the hon. secretaryship owing to business resources.

 
2nd February 1931 – BCC Parks Committee Minute
 
Included in this minute there is a copy of a letter, dated 17th January 1931, from the Chief Constable, to the Secretary of the Parks Department, in which it is noted that the City Police Band gave one performance in King’s Heath Park in each of the years 1926 to 1930 inclusive.

The General Purposes Sub-Committee presented their report:
 
Kings Heath Park
Reconstruction of Dads Lane Bridge
Messrs. John Wilson & Sons, Public Works Contractors of 117 Dale End, Birmingham, have been granted the temporary use of a site in the above mentioned park, coloured green on the plan to be submitted at your meeting, for the erection of an office and sheds during the work of reconstruction of Dads Lane bridge, and also the use for storage purposes, of the land shown in red on the plan, which last mentioned site is to be transferred to the Public Works Department for road widening purposes.
Messrs. John Wilson & Sons have undertaken responsibility for any damage or injury that might result and for which in the ordinary course your Committee would be responsible and also to reinstate the ground to its present condition, upon completion of the works.  They will also erect a suitable hoarding around the site while the work is in progress.
Your Sub-Committee recommend that the action taken be confirmed.
 
 
9407   Resolved:-  That the action taken in granting Messrs. John Wilson & Sons the temporary use of land in King’s Heath Park in connection with the reconstruction of Dads Lane Bridge, as mentioned in the report of the General Purposes Sub-Committee, be confirmed.

Music in the Parks
The English Folk Dance Society
Upon the authority of your Chairman, the above mentioned Society have been granted the use of the Bandstand in Kings Heath Park and the ground immediately surrounding the same, on Saturday 11th (or 18th) July next, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday the 19th September next from 3.00 to 5.30 p.m. for the purposes of massed country dancing.
It is understood that similar arrangements are being made in regard to Hyde Park in London and in other parks in different parts of the country.  The Society propose to make no charge to the public for dancing, but to have programmes of the dance on sale at the park.
The Society propose to arrange for the music to be provided by gramophone with microphone attachment for amplifying, or failing that a small string orchestra.
Confirmation of the Chairman’s action is recommended.
 
 
Musical Reproduction in Parks
Your Sub-Committee have considered a letter from Lanchester Laboratories Ltd. with reference to the demonstration of their musical reproduction system given by them last year at Kings Heath Park, and offering to do business either on the basis of supplying the equipment outright or hiring the same.  After due consideration, your Sub-Committee have decided to take no action in the matter.
 
 
9433   Resolved:-  That the action of the Chairman in granting the use of the Bandstand in Kings Heath Park to the English Folk Dance Society for the purposes of massed country dancing on the dates mentioned in the Report of the Administration Sub-Committee be confirmed.

Co-operator’s Funeral – The funeral took place on Thursday at Brandwood End Cemetery, of Mr. G.F. Finch, who died on Sunday at his home 54, Highbury Road, Kings Heath, aged 56.  Mr. Finch for the past 24 years had been employed at Kings Heath Park, where he was a well-known figure to the sporting organizations playing there.  He was also a prominent member of the local Co-operative Society, of which he was an official.  He was also a member of the Oddfellows.
Before the interment, the vicar (the rev. H.S. Watts) conducted the service at All saints.
The chief mourners were: the widow, Mr. & Mrs. G. Finch (son-in-law and daughters), Mr. and Mrs. D. Breakwell (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. W. Finch (son), Miss Florence Finch (daughter), also brothers and sisters.  The Sir John Holder Lodge of the Order of Oddfellows was represented by Messrs. Laughton, Tandy, Goddard, Lythgoe, Smith and Chance.  The staff of Kings Heath Park was represented by Mr. Cooper.  There were numerous floral tributes from relatives, neighbours and colleagues.

Upon the instructions of your Chairman, the rent paid by Arthur Lusher, Foreman, Trees in Streets, in respect of the rooms occupied by him in the above mentioned house, has been reduced from 15/- to 12/6d per week, as from 10th August 1931

Bowlers Dine – The annual dinner of Kings Heath Park Bowling Club was held on Wednesday night in the assembly room of the Cross Guns Hotel.  Mr. J. Cox, the president of the club, presided over a large company, supported by Mr. F.H. Alcock, vice-president.

Football Dressing Rooms
Tenders were recently obtained for the second contract for the erection of dressing rooms (Compiler’s note:  we subsequently learn that these were fabricated in reinforced concrete) in various parks and recreation grounds in respect of which, by arrangement with the Finance Committee, the sum of £5,000 was allowed in your Committee’s estimates for the current financial year.
 
The tenders received were as follows:-

Upon the authority of your Chairman the lowest tender, namely, that of John Kendall Ltd., amounting to £5,052. 15. 0. has been accepted, and the confirmation of the Committee is recommended.  Messrs. John Kendall Ltd., were the contractors for the first set of dressing rooms.
 
It is also recommended that the dressing rooms forming the subject of this contract should be erected in the following parks and recreation grounds in the number specified:-

Although the sum of £5,000 in respect of this work is included in the estimates for the current financial year, it is proposed that £3,000 only shall be charged to this year’s accounts, the balance of £2,000 being carried forward to a future year.  The contractor is allowed 9 months from the date of the order to commence within which to complete the contract, and it is impossible for the whole of the dressing rooms to be erected before the end of the current financial year.
 
 
9740   Resolved:-  That the acceptance of the tender of John Kendall Ltd., amounting to £5,052-15-0 for the erection of football dressing rooms be confirmed and the Town Clerk instructed to prepare and attach the Corporate Seal to the requisite contract documents; and further that the allocation of dressing rooms to parks and recreation grounds, as set out in the foregoing report, be approved.
